A. J. Casson was a commercial artist who worked under Frank Carmichael - a member of the group of seven and eventually joined the group when a previous member - Frank Johnston withdrew. He also continued as a commercial artist even after joining the group and his work was a bit different in the sense that he did not rush out to paint the North Woods landscape as many of the group did - but confined his work to rural scenes of southern Ontario.
